Skip Dipping 2009

In a record turn out, around 30 students and friends headed out on Tuesday 15th September to get a first hand insight into the level of waste being produced by Brisbane supermarkets and other food retailers. Over an hour and a half, a convoy of 7 vehicles (a sight to behold in itself) collected enough food to cook up a three course meal . . . a delicious potato and tomato curry, salad, served with freshly toasted turkish bread with avocado, and fruit salad for dessert. We were able to wash it all down with soft drinks also procured from the bin! Looking forward to hearing more from those who also shared in this adventure, please share your thoughts here.

  1. I thought that this was a great introduction to skip dipping for those who hadn't been before. As there was so many people I think it was probably less intimidating. I also felt that this was an experience hat really brought people together. It was great to see so many people come along and there was such a positive vibe.

  2. “That’s my rubbish. You can’t have it!”. The highlight of my night was definitely hearing someone actually say those words. What a loaded statement! It was like a textbook moment for our class to hear a real person say those words out loud. You couldn’t have scripted it better to fit in with what we had been learning in the classroom about the issues surrounding skip dipping. It’s like your rubbish suddenly has value to you when someone else wants it. I don’t want it but you can’t have it for free. It was so interesting to see a business owners (they shall remain anonymous) reaction to people trying to take possession of their unwanted goods. I understand that their goods had value to them as they have put their labour (or paid for someone else labour thereby investing their capital stream) and their capital into all other cost associated with production. But why then waste so many of your resources by having so much waste product? For me it brought home how much cheaper and easier it must be for business to just write perfectly good food off than find alternative ends for it.
